If you're thinking of implementing the Microsoft SharePoint platform for your business, you must consider the operating systems and browsers that are compatible with the SharePoint environment. Other computers on your network and collaborative systems may use a Mac without the SharePoint software installed. Luckily, you can work with the SharePoint platform across operating systems by using a web browser for access.

Why Use SharePoint

SharePoint is designed specifically to function with Microsoft Office. The purpose of SharePoint has changed drastically since it was first introduced in 2001. The platform originally served as a means of creating and managing websites, but it has since turned into more of an internal content management system.

A company can use SharePoint to share documents and media files, with the power to edit and collaborate in a team environment. This makes the platform very convenient for businesses that pass information between one or more individuals on a regular basis.

Although SharePoint as a software service is setup to run in the PC environment, it has a cloud-based service that makes cross-platform use easy to execute. The ability to use it on PC and iOS systems empowers the business to use SharePoint while knowing all parties can access the information through a simple web browser. The only limitation becomes offline use for Mac specific users or any device solely relying on the cloud-based access.

SharePoint for Mac Instructions

Navigate to your company SharePoint site using your preferred web browser. On Mac systems, SharePoint Safari is the default and it works well. The URL is provided to you by the SharePoint site or site collection administrator.

Log in to the site with your username and password. Your access credentials are provided by the SharePoint site administrator or site collection administrator. They consist of your email address and a SharePoint password, which is also provided to you by the administrator.

Your employer should provide these credentials unless you are the actual administrator. In this case, just login with your email and password that was set up at the time of account creation. As an administrator, you have the power to add and remove users as well.

Perform document sharing and collaboration functions on the SharePoint platform. Navigate through the SharePoint site as you normally would. You can upload files, share documents, create tasks and alerts and manage users in an administrative role.

Managing Functions on a Mac

You can add SharePoint media files while working on a Mac, if your access credentials permit the action. You can also administer a SharePoint site collection and individual SharePoint sites on a Mac, as long as you have been assigned the credentials or control the system as an administrator.

In fact, you can administer the entire SharePoint platform on a Mac because SharePoint Central Administration is fully operational in both the Safari and Firefox Web browsers. All features, with the exception of those that are dependent on Microsoft protocols, are available when accessing a SharePoint site from Safari or Firefox.

The Multiple File Upload feature is not available through the SharePoint platform when working on a Mac. However, the Microsoft Document Connection is integrated with Office 2011 for Mac. Simply install the application from the Office installation media for a more robust file upload process. Microsoft Document Connection enables you to upload multiple files to the SharePoint platform on a Mac.

Limitations on Mac Systems

Some SharePoint features are only available when using the Internet Explorer browser. These features include connecting to Outlook, Excel Services and creating workspaces from the Outlook client. Additionally, the Explorer View is not available when using SharePoint on a Mac.

Integrated Microsoft Office features, such as InfoPath and OneNote, are not available when working with SharePoint on a Mac because these features are not available in the Mac version of Office. These features operate using ActiveX technology, which is not supported on the Mac.

Moving from your PC to your new Mac? Consider it done.

With macOS, you can move all the information from your old PC to your new Mac. Built-in Windows-to-Mac migration in macOS automatically transfers your documents, music, contacts, calendars, and email accounts (Outlook and Windows Live Mail), and puts them in the appropriate folders and applications on your new Mac. Just like that.

If you buy your Mac at an Apple Store, Personal Setup can help you get off to a great start.

Work with anyone.

Every Mac comes with Pages, Numbers, and Keynote — powerful productivity apps from Apple that help you create stunning documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. You can collaborate with one person or many people to create and edit Pages, Keynote, and Numbers files. And everyone can work on the same document at the same time — from across town or across the globe. You can also open, edit, and save Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files with these apps, so you can easily work with others, regardless of whether they’re on a Mac or PC.

Use Microsoft Office for Mac. Connect to Microsoft Exchange Server.

Fun fact: There’s a version of Microsoft Office written just for Mac. So you can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on a Mac just like on a PC.

macOS also provides built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server. So you can use all the apps you love on your Mac, and have access to your mail, contacts, and calendar from the office, all at the same time.

Access your files from anywhere with iCloud.

Your Mac comes with iCloud Drive, which lets you safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and any other kinds of files in iCloud. Then you can access them from any device, including your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.1

Industry standard‑bearer.

Thanks to its support for industry standards, macOS works with virtually all email providers and websites. It also lets you view the most common file types, including Office documents, PDFs, images, text files, MP3s, videos, ZIP files, and more.

So if you’re moving files from a PC or if your friends and colleagues send you files, you can rest assured they’ll work beautifully on your Mac.

Relax. Your camera, printer, and mouse work, too.

Almost any device that connects to a computer via USB, audio cable, or Bluetooth will work with a Mac. That includes digital cameras, external hard drives, printers, keyboards, speakers, and even your right-click mouse. And with technologies like AirPrint and the array of class drivers included with macOS, you can start using these devices as soon as you plug them in — no need to manually download additional software.

A Mac can even run Windows.

Have a Windows application you need to use once in a while? No problem. Every new Mac lets you install and run Windows at native speeds, using a built-in utility called Boot Camp.

Setup is simple and safe for your Mac files. After you’ve completed the installation, you can boot up your Mac using either macOS or Windows. (That’s why it’s called Boot Camp.) Or if you want to run Windows and Mac applications at the same time — without rebooting — you can install Windows using VMware or Parallels software.2

Connect to PCs over a network.

The Finder not only lets you browse files on your Mac, it also makes it easy to find files on other computers — both Mac and PC — on your home network. Computers that allow file sharing automatically show up in the Shared section of the Finder sidebar, allowing you to browse files and folders you have permission to view.
